Mobile phone users in the Great Southern will benefit from improved coverage through the Regional Telecommunications Project (RTP). The RTP is a State-wide initiative funded through Royalties for Regions with a budget of $45 million, to run from 2015 to 2018. The GSDC worked with the Department of Commerce to identify sites for the region.

The Great Southern will receive 30 new mobile phone installations during the life of the project, many also supported by the Commonwealth Government’s Mobile Black Spot Program. Five sites have been activated so far in the Great Southern: Nyabing, Albany West, Cranbrook, Ongerup North and Borden. The balance of the sites will be rolled out over the four years to 2018.

Improvements to mobile phone coverage are a significant strand of the Connected Great Southern transformational project area of the Great Southern Regional Investment Blueprint.
