Inland Great Southern Regional Drought Resilience Plan
Through collaboration with the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD), and the Shires of Broomehill-Tambellup, Cranbrook, Gnowangerup, Jerramungup, Katanning, Kent, Kojonup and Woodanilling, we worked to deliver a regional drought resilience plan for the inland Great Southern. The Great Southern, Mid West and Wheatbelt regions developed plans in the Regional Drought Resilience Planning (RDRP) Program’s foundational year.
The purpose of the plan is to strengthen the Great Southern’s drought resilience, minimising adverse effects on the people and economy prior to extreme events taking place. The process encompassed advice from technical experts, universities, CSIRO, peak grower groups, natural resource management organisations, regional businesses, and state and commonwealth government agencies to guide development of the plan.
This project was jointly funded through the Australian Government’s Future Drought Fund and DPIRD. The Regional Drought Resilience Planning Program is one of the programs under the $5 billion Federal Future Drought Fund, a fund that invests in building resilience to drought for farmers, allied industries and regional communities.
The drought resilience planning process involves:
- A Drought Vulnerability Assessment: A combination of expert input and extensive stakeholder consultation, providing a science-based approach incorporating the economic, social and environmental resilience factors for the region.
- A Regional Drought Resilience Plan: A strategic plan prepared with stakeholders, focusing on innovative ways (projects and actions) to build resilience across the region’s agricultural sector and allied industries.
- An Investment Framework: A framework of investment-ready drought resilient actions, allowing for public and private sector investment.
Project update
The Inland Great Southern Drought Resilience Plan has now been completed, and an extension to the program has been approved including funding to commence priority projects identified by the plan.
