Regional Development Minister Alannah MacTiernan presented the award at a dinner that highlighted the virtues of Great Southern produce.

Ms Lockley’s contributions to managing the region’s natural resources include a long record of volunteer work for Katanning Landcare and Katanning Environmental. She was instrumental in the opening of the Katanning Environmental Nursery and has been a leader in the development of the Friends of Piesse Park, which is developing an environmental education centre at Piesse Lake.

Along with the award of the sterling silver GSDC Medal, Ms Lockley will receive a $5,000 GSDC grant to support further activities in landcare and environmental awareness.

Ninety guests enjoyed the presentation dinner with a menu featuring ingredients from the region and wine from five Great Southern wineries who partnered with us for the event. Short videos introduced the wineries, and the producers were on hand to provide finer details.

A second video set profiled the three nominations shortlisted for the award. Apart from Ms Lockley, the shortlist comprised hydrologist Ruhi Ferdowsian, who has contributed over three decades to the development of water knowledge in the Great Southern, and consultant and educator couple Steve and Geraldine Janicke, who are experts in catchment management and aquatic ecology.

Shortlisted nominees receive a $1,000 grant to further work in their field.
