Mount Barker agribusiness precinct a step closer
The GSDC and the Shire of Plantagenet will continue to liaise with DevelopmentWA as it undertakes preliminary planning for a proposed agribusiness precinct at the Yerriminup Industrial Area near Mount Barker. GSDC involvement with Yerriminup has been a long-term project undertaken since the early 1990s in partnership with the Shire of Plantagenet and Landcorp, now Development WA.
The 193-hectare site is zoned for special restricted uses with a buffer zone to support agribusiness processing.
The preliminary investigations into the agribusiness precinct are supported by $300,000 in State Government funding announced by Regional Development Minister Alannah MacTiernan on 17 April.
The Minister said the Government was driving new job opportunities in regional communities.
"The Great Southern is home to some of the State's best agricultural produce: the Mount Barker AgriBusiness Precinct has the potential to leverage off this strength and create downstream processing and value adding businesses with significant job opportunities,” Minister MacTiernan said.
"A fully developed precinct will support new businesses, creating jobs and contributing positively to the local and regional economy. Initial work will include feasibility investigations and completing an approved subdivision plan and costed detailed design."
Yerriminup was initiated to promote the downstream processing of local resources. It forms part of DevelopmentWA’s strategic land bank program, which ensures key areas of the State have sufficient supply of appropriately zoned, well-buffered industrial land to meet the future needs of economic growth identified by long-term planning.
