Growth and Diversification
Major projects in the Great Southern focused on growth and diversification are listed below.
Breath Feature Film: Breath Productions is making a feature film of Tim Winton’s award-winning novel Breath. A $2.3 million investment by the State Government, including $1.5 million from Royalties for Regions, helped to secure Denmark as the film site. Location filming took place in the first half of 2016. Breath will be released on 3 May 2018.
Biomass Fuel Pellets: Plantation Energy exports densified biomass fuel pellets manufactured from sustainably managed bluegum plantation forests. Production of 250,000t per annum is expected. Operations were suspended in 2012 but plant refurbishment took place in Q1 2017, and operations restarted in July 2017.
Premier Flour Mill: The project will restore the Premier Four Mill building to its former glory, featuring a Dome Cafe and restaurant, 20-room inn, museum and space for additional retail activities. Work is under way and completion is expected by December 2017.
Albany Shellfish Hatchery: Existing infrastructure at Albany Aquaculture Park is being refurbished to facilitate the production of multi-species spat. This includes plant and equipment to enable the supply of clean seawater throughout the facility, and treatment and discharge of waste water. Construction is under way and completion is expected by the end of 2017.
Tourism and Information Hub: A two-storey extension to the Albany Public Library will provide visitor and library services. The ground floor will form the new visitor centre and the upper floor addition will be a flexible area that can be used for exhibitions, library purposes, meetings or functions. Work is under way and completion is expected by June 2018.
