Since its genesis as the Great Southern Development Authority in 1987, and as the Great Southern Development Commission since 1994 (see Our History), the GSDC has continually sought to improve economic and social outcomes for the region.
Milestones over the years include working with the University of Western Australia to establish the UWA Albany Centre. The region is proud to host a campus of a highly-ranked tertiary institution.
As part of the development of the university’s presence in the Great Southern, the GSDC helped to establish the Centre of Excellence in Natural Resource Management, and then secured funding for the Science Building in which it is now located.
A major highlight of the GSDC’s work over the decades was the construction of the Albany Entertainment Centre. The GSDC secured $68.8 million in State Government funding for the centre, which opened in December 2010.
