Tourism Promotion

Activities and supported projects promoting tourism in 2008/9 included the Hidden Treasures of the Great Southern group gaining a Regional Development Scheme grant and leveraging it to fund an integrated marketing initiative, part of which was a “Toolkit” which will assist participating rural communities to organise themed group tours on a sustainable basis.  The group has also been successful, with GSDC support, in planning and developing drive trails and signage.

Integrated marketing events that attracted support included the promotion of the Walpole Wilderness Area, the STARS of WA (Southern Tourist Attraction Routes), the planning of the national Ulysses Club AGM and the Festival of the Sea, which was held at the Albany Boat Shed over Easter 2009. There was also collaboration with the Great Southern Wine Producers Association and others in the development of regional wine and food trails and events.

The GSDC and the Heritage Council researched the region’s maritime heritage assets to create a strategic plan document for the South Coast from Chatham Island to Bremer Bay. The intention is to identify and research assets for conservation purposes, community enjoyment and the building of cultural tourism products.

Support for events and conferences held in the region including the Frankland River Music Festival; Perth International Arts Festival Great Southern program; Taste Great Southern; the Great Southern Wine and Food Festival; Great Southern Adventure Race; Bibbulmun Track 10-year celebration; and the Albany Classic Motor Event.
